Sherlock: Season One

Sherlock: Season OneIn the wake of Guy Ritchie's reimagining, the BBC puts its own stamp on Arthur Conan Doyle's sleuth--and sets him in a London filled with cell phones and laptops. In the pilot, director Paul McGuigan (a keen visual stylist) introduces Sherlock Holmes (Atonement's Benedict Cumberbatch) as a "high-functioning sociopath" and Dr. John Watson (The Office's Martin Freeman) as an army veteran with posttraumatic stress disorder. Through a mutual friend, the two become flatmates at 221B Baker Street (Una Stubbs plays their landlady). Holmes, who consults with Scotland Yard inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves) on his trickier cases, drafts Watson to assist him.

In "Study in Pink," four people commit suicide by poison. When Holmes sets out to establish a link, he falls right into the culprit's clutches. Other cases concern a smuggling operation ("The Blind Banker") and a mad bomber ("The Great Game"). Though he doesn't make a formal entrance until episode 3, Sherlock's archenemy, Moriarty (Andrew Scott), has a hand in each mystery, while the detective's brother, Mycroft (cocreator Mark Gatiss), first appears when he tries to hire Watson as a spy, an offer the good doctor refuses. Through his job at a medical office, Watson also meets Sarah (Zoe Telford), who becomes his girlfriend.

Part of the fun of Jeremy Brett's Holmes (and Agatha Christie's Poirot) came from the period details, so this update takes a little getting used to--as does the occasional mumbled line--but Cumberbatch and Freeman share an enjoyable Odd Couple rapport, marked by flashes of deadpan wit, which compensates for the absence of deerstalker caps (Holmes favors scarves) and journals (Watson maintains a website). Extras include commentary on the finale, the original pilot, and a featurette, in which cocreator Steven Moffat (Doctor Who) notes that Cumberbatch was his only choice for the title role. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

League of legends battle training tutorial mode add; Hands on preview

Riot games is an advanced tutorial to add its DotA alike game League of legends. During the game a basic tutorial that explains the basics of the game in a non-game scenario battle training mode is done on the game 5-versus-5 Summoner's Rift map. Players can also earn experience and influence points-albeit at a reduced price-in this mode, which adds some replayability. The tutorial includes everything from the character selection through the post game report.
Setting on the popular 5 vs 5 Summoner's Rift card battle training couples a player with 4 AI-controlled teammates against 5 AI-controlled opponent. Battle of training's trained game experience starts walking of the player by selecting one of the three, easy to learn but powerful champions.

Through a series of in-game mini quests (the card and UI highlights players help include), the player through the main objectives of a typical game.

While working on these mini-quests, players are presented with designed to help players dynamic tips from experienced League of legends containing more effectively to konkurrieren.Die tips also screenshots and explanations of the tactics used in League of legends. If the game was finished, the tutorial provides an overview of the statistics in the end of game screen provided.

I had a chance to play an early build of the battle and it should definitely help new players, but I'm not sure, it will take, players from complete beginners to you feel comfortable about jumping into a real Spiel.Es is a lot helpful direction, tips, and and concepts, but the depth is running out fast.

For example, players will be asked to buy an item, select a track, push towers earnings on creeps and even beat the jungle for additional gold and experience last hits, but battle does training to explain little more complex mechanics or team tactics.I'm not saying it is tremendously helpful for new player, no interactive tutorial is far better than some FAQ or on the wall of the Textes--but there is still a missing link experience required by real game.

I wish it would go into detail about coordination with teammates, stunning and other crowd control and how certain characters to erstellen.Der mode is tips things like walk into the brush, the enemies you are so many other things in League of legends, that not everything can unsaid in this advanced tutorial gehen.Sie verbirgt.Es pop-up context based, however, if you do but have.

League of legends remains one of the easiest games DotA-how to get in and it's free to play, unless you start real money on micro transactions to plunking.

Battle training will be published in November, and the team is to publish it next Wednesday, shoot, although this date is not final.

Moshi Monsters Reaches 29 Million Users

Moshi Monsters Reaches 29 Million Users UK-based Mind Candy, developer and publisher of child-targeted MMO Moshi Monsters, revealed that its free-to-play game has reached 29 million registered accounts spread out across 150 countries.

Of that total, 20 million accounts were registered in the past year -- 35 percent from the U.S. and 30 percent from the U.K. According to a report from TechCrunch, one in three UK children aged 7 to 11 years old has signed up to play Moshi Monsters.

In the MMO, users adopt and raise a monster, earn and spend Rox (in-game currency), purchase accessories and decorations for their virtual home, and play over 150 million puzzle games designed to test skills like basic math, spatial awareness, logic, and vocabulary.

Though Moshi Monsters is free to play, a ?5 ($8) monthly subscription option is available for access to exclusive areas, features, and more Rox. Mind Candy hasn't disclosed how man subscribers it's accumulated, but the studio has been profitable since last year.

Mind Candy says it attracts subscribers by keeping the maximum cost players can spend on the game at ?5, and not running scam-like advertisement offers to give out virtual currency. The game's limited social networking features that allow kids to communicate with friends have helped, too.

The online game will also break out with real-world products next year, as licensing deals for Moshi Monsters toys already in place for the U.S. and UK. Adding to that, Mind Candy has partnered with Penguin to publish a series of books based on the MMO's setting around the world.

CEO Michael Acton Smith ambitiously projected that the retail value of all Moshi Monsters-related merchandise sold in 2011 will come out to $100 million: "We have major retail commitments for many of the lines so have a pretty good idea of how revenue numbers will stack up. That said, it is only a forecast and we've got still got a lot of work to do to achieve it."

Five new PlayStation 3 titles debuted in the top 10 on the software sales charts, and the platform sold 20,128 units, approximately 1,000 units less than last week.

Star Trek Online To Offer Player-Created Missions

Star Trek Online To Offer Player-Created Missions Atari and Cryptic Studios will allow Star Trek Online subscribers to play and create their own custom missions, planets, and even star systems in the MMORPG with a new toolset called The Foundry.

Currently under testing, "The Foundry for Star Trek Online (Beta) Mission Authoring Tool" will allow users to customize pre-made planets with their own encounters, objects, and stories. They'll be able to customize pre-made star systems or create their own from scratch, too.

Players will also be able to create missions that take place in existing open world areas and browse through user-made stories and access content created with The Foundry through a "Community Authored" section of the game.

Looking to ensure a certain level of quality for this custom content, Cryptic will invite Star Trek Online players to sign up as reviewers to examine and veto the missions before the general public can access them. Normal users will also be able to rate episodes they've completed.

Launched in February, Star Trek Online received mixed reviews as critics cited issues with bugs, a lack of polish, and repetitive missions. Cryptic has worked to resolve those issues by releasing "seasons" (major updates), and appears to be addressing that last complaint with The Foundry.

The developer's City of Heroes team, which joined NCsoft as Paragon Studios several years ago, released a similar tool called the Mission Architect for the superhero MMORPG in April 2009.

Microsoft: 1 Billion Hours Spent On Xbox Live Every Month

Microsoft: 1 Billion Hours Spent On Xbox Live Every Month Microsoft on Friday said its 25 million Xbox Live members are averaging over 40 hours per month on the online service, spending the equivalent of over 1 billion hours per month on Live altogether, as the platform continues to expand beyond multiplayer gaming.

The company said there has been a 157 percent increase in time spent watching movies and television programs on the increasingly multimedia-focused Xbox 360 over the last year, which has a worldwide install base of 42 million consoles.

Microsoft and Sony Computer Entertainment -- and to a lesser extent, Nintendo -- have been constantly updating their video game consoles with features like streaming Netflix, Hulu, movie rentals, television show downloads, Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm.

The move into areas beyond gaming exhibits the companies' attempts at taking increasing advantage of their device's growing install bases and TV and internet connections. Other upcoming non-gaming offerings coming to Xbox Live include ESPN 360, Zune Music and video chat application Video Kinect.

An October study from Knowledge Networks said that 21 percent of American consumers use video game consoles to view movie and TV content. Microsoft said that 42 percent of paying Xbox Live Gold subscribers in the U.S. use the system to watch TV and movies, and that those users watch an average of one hour video content on their Xbox 360s daily.

Microsoft recently said that it would expand Xbox Live support to nine more countries, bringing the number of supported countries to 35 this November, the same month that Xbox 360's body-scanning Kinect camera peripheral hits shelves.

Nintendo Bringing Wii Shopping Service, 3DS Demo Event To Japan

Nintendo Bringing Wii Shopping Service, 3DS Demo Event To Japan Nintendo today announced a new online shopping service for its Wii console in Japan, as well as a three-day event showcasing the Nintendo 3DS to potential Japanese customers.

The Wii-no-ma Shopping Service, built on top of the system's Wii-no-ma video-on-demand service, will launch in Japan November 1 with over 10,000 unique items including "foods, daily commodities, fashion items and furniture," according to an investor presentation made this week by Nintendo President Satoru Iwata.

"TV shopping and net shopping are nothing new today. However, with Wii-no-Ma Shopping, using the intuitive Wii Remote, you can enjoy shopping 24 hours a day on your TV at home," Iwata said.

"We are aiming to offer 'fun shopping from your living room' that even those who are not accustomed to online net shopping can feel comfortable to use."

Certain offered products will be featured in video presentations, Iwata added, and the service will include multiple payment methods, including a pay-by-phone option for the "many people who have hesitated to actually start net shopping in spite of their interests in doing so."

Iwata also used the investor briefing to announce a massive demonstration event for Japanese consumers interested in viewing the glasses-free 3D effects of the upcoming Nintendo 3DS first-hand.

The Nintendo president said he hoped the hands-on event, which will take place in Makuhari Messe convention center January 8 through 10, will help players see the unique features of the system in a way that can't be conveyed through other means.

"We are hoping that our consumers come to the event to experience and understand what kind of new gaming experiences are waiting for them when they can view these experiences in 3D without the need for special glasses," Iwata said, "how different it will be from playing Nintendo DS games, and which software is going to be available for them at the launch and immediately afterward."

Iwata added that the company hoped to hold similar events around Japan before the 3DS' February launch in the country, but that these plans had not yet been finalized.
